If lonely were a heartbeat

If lonely were a heartbeat
It would freeze my chest inside
With hollow, ice-cold bursts of pain
’til by loneliness I died.

But oh – I wish I’d only known
What bliss loneliness could be
Compared to writhing heartbreak’s force
That has it’s grip on me.

In wretched gasps I cry, Lord
Before you, my God, I weep.
I take this prodigal heart of mine
And place it at your feet.

To quiet waters lead me now,
‘neath softest grass I beg you bury
My mustard seed of tiny faith,
And want that is but agony.

Oh, now I know what I would give
For but an ounce of Jesus’ love:
The world and moon and sun and stars,
This cost I’ve counted up.

He takes my heart with Him to heaven,
Where height nor depth nor thief prevails.
Leaves with me my cross to bear
And His heart of love that never fails.
